GIFTED PROGRAM

SECONDARY LEVEL OPTIONS AND SERVICES

Learning Resources RoomSpecial materials and equipment are available for students and teachers in the North Alcove of the Café.

Independent, Outside the Box Studies—Individual projects or studies may be planned in areas of interest to the gifted student. Studies can be completed under the supervision of the classroom teacher, coordinator of gifted, or other appropriate person.  Students in grades 11 and 12 may enroll in this option, applications must be received by the counselor’s office by November 15th for the following spring semester or May 15th for the fall semester.  Independent study projects may not be done in a course that is in the program of studies.   Internships, mentorships or other special projects are available with this option. 

Job Shadowing—Available for juniors and seniors with all B's and above.  This intended for students learn about potential careers by working with an individual in the industry, shadowing them through a work day (or part of a day). 

Individual Conferences—Students will meet with the facilitator to plan education experiences, discuss issues of concern, and receive academic or personal guidance.

Group Meetings—Special small group sessions may be arranged to review topics of importance of to small groups of students.

Field Trips, Workshops, Seminars—Special activities will be arranged and made available to students in the gifted program.  Professors from area universities (including the KSU Presidential Lecture Series) provide college-level presentations and workshops are available. Students must have all B's and above.

Scholarship Help—Resources and assistance for finding scholarships, applying, academic resume and essay writing. 

College and Career Planning---Materials for researching college and career along with advisement are available.

The Topeka West Gifted Program utilizes the resource model approach.  Each student has a mail slot in the North Alcove.  The facilitator accumulates and disseminates information of importance to gifted students in that location.  The facilitator also serves as a resource for classroom teachers and provides consultative services to all school personnel who work with the gifted students in classes and/or activities.
