Topeka Model United Nations is a two-day event that simulates the working and functions of the real United Nations. Delegations from area high schools representing member nations gather at Washburn University to discuss resolutions or proposals on how best to solve selected world problems. Parliamentary procedures and debate techniques are used throughout the two-day session as delegated present their resolutions, discuss pros and cons, make amendments and vote.
Students prepare for Model UN by researching their countries and the agenda topics, writing position papers and resolutions, and learning parliamentary procedures. Students' efforts are judged, with awards for the best delegates as well as the best delegations. Topeka West has a fine history of success in the Topeka Model UN event; annually, West students apply for and are chosen to hold the prestigous officer positions.
No experience is necessary to participate in the Model United Nations; however, students should know in advance that there is quite a bit of work involved in preparing for this activity.
TBD, is the sponsor for Model UN.
