Cheerleading

At Topeka West High School, cheerleaders function as the main spirit support group for football, men's basketball, and women's basketball. There are two squads of cheerleaders: varsity and junior varsity, which are chosen by tryouts only. These are held in April of each year. Potential cheerleaders are judged by three panels of judges on two chants, one cheer, jumps and a dance routine; teacher evaluations count one-fifth of the total score. Each cheerleader is expected to attend camp, usually held in July. Camp practices take place in the spring and summer. Fall practice begins in August and is held twice a week during football season and once a week during basketball season. Responsibilities include supporting Topeka West High School at all times, creating spirit and leading cheers at football and basketball games along with being positive leaders in the student body.

Cheerleader sponsors are science instructor Ms. Lisa Volland, math instructor Ms. Renee Bruns, and Ms. Terri Hodge.
